Climate Justice

“We are the first generation to understand how serious the climate crisis is and the last generation to be able to do something about it."

Climate Awareness for Our Wise at Heart Community

As part of our deep commitment to climate justice, we recognised the importance of including voices and perspectives that are too often overlooked in the environmental conversation. Climate justice means ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance, has the opportunity to understand, participate in, and benefit from the transition toward a sustainable and equitable future. It is not enough to focus solely on policy or technology. We must also build a movement that respects and values every member of our community.

To honour this principle, the Mary Robinson Centre, in partnership with Mayo County Council, was delighted to offer a free six-week Climate Change Awareness Programme designed specifically for people over the age of sixty. The course met once a week at the Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina, with each session running for two hours in a welcoming and accessible setting.

Facilitated by the experienced and knowledgeable Jacinta Barris, the programme created a warm, respectful, and supportive learning environment. Participants came together to explore climate awareness, discuss practical ways to connect with nature, and discover how simple everyday choices can make a meaningful difference. The focus throughout was not on fear or blame, but on hope, shared purpose, and collective action.

By offering this programme completely free of charge, we aimed to remove financial barriers to access and affirm that older members of our community have a vital and active role to play in climate action. Their lived experience, wisdom, and deep care for future generations are invaluable assets in the fight for a just and sustainable world.

We were proud to run this programme and look forward to offering similar opportunities again
