Mary Robinson

Museum – Coming Soon

Because the story of Mary Robinson is not history — it is a lens through which we understand the world we are living in now.

The Mary Robinson Centre is located in the very building where Ireland’s first female President grew up, her childhood home on Emmett Street in Ballina, County Mayo. In the future, a new museum experience will open within these walls. This unique setting will offer visitors a special opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Mary Robinson and to connect with her remarkable journey from this local neighbourhood to the global stage.

We intend to create a carefully curated display that reflects the spirit and significance of this historic home. The museum will celebrate Mary Robinson’s enduring legacy while honouring the building’s deep personal history as her family home. In partnership with University of Galway and Mayo County Council her works will be archived and made available to the public.

We look forward to welcoming visitors in the future and to sharing a meaningful cultural destination for Ballina and the wider Mayo region. Please check back for updates as our plans evolve. We will share more information with you soon.

A Museum Designed for Engagement

Moving beyond observation to reflection, dialogue and action.

Rather than presenting a static narrative, the Museum is designed as an active space of engagement. Visitors encounter moments of progress, controversy and challenge, and are encouraged to reflect on how leadership is exercised, questioned and held accountable. The experience does not offer simple answers, but invites deeper understanding of the ethical, social and political choices that shape our world.

At its core, the Museum asks visitors to consider their own relationship to issues of justice, equality and responsibility. By exploring Mary Robinson’s legacy as a catalyst for change, the Museum becomes a place not only of learning, but of personal reflection — a space where past experience informs present thinking and inspires future action.
